IELTS Speaking Test Format — Part 1, 2 & 3 Explained

The IELTS Speaking test is identical for Academic and General Training. It lasts 11–14 minutes and is conducted as a face-to-face interview. All three parts are included in every practice test on LinguaPractice.

Part 1
Introduction · 4–5 minutes
General questions about yourself, your home, family, work, studies and interests. Questions are straightforward — this part warms you up and establishes rapport with the examiner.
Part 2
Cue Card · 3–4 minutes
You receive a cue card with a topic and bullet points. You have 1 minute to prepare, then speak for 1–2 minutes. The examiner asks 1–2 follow-up questions after your talk.
Part 3
Discussion · 4–5 minutes
Abstract discussion questions related to the Part 2 topic. You are expected to give opinions, analyse ideas, and speculate. This is the most demanding part of the Speaking test.
