How to Answer IELTS Speaking Part 1 Questions

Part 1 is scored on the same 4 criteria as the rest of the Speaking test — Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation. The key is to answer naturally, not just correctly.

Give a direct answer
Answer the question first, then extend. Never give a one-word answer.
Add a reason or example
Use "because", "so", "which means" to link ideas naturally.
Aim for 20–30 seconds
Too short = low fluency score. Too long = loses coherence.
Use natural vocabulary
Avoid memorised phrases. Use vocabulary that suits the topic.
