Your TOEFL iBT Total Score

How the TOEFL iBT Total Score Is Calculated

Unlike IELTS, which averages your four section scores, TOEFL simply adds them together. Each of the four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing — is scored on its own 0–30 scale, and the four are summed for a total out of 120.

Example: Reading 24 + Listening 22 + Speaking 20 + Writing 21 = 87 total.

There's no rounding to worry about — whatever the four sections add up to is your final score, exactly.

TOEFL iBT does not currently offer a section-only retake — you sit the full test again. ETS has trialled a "MyBest Scores" superscore, which combines your best section scores across multiple attempts in the last two years; check whether your target institution accepts it.
TOEFL iBT scores are valid for 2 years from your test date, the same validity period as IELTS.
