How to improve your IELTS Academic Reading band score — and what the tests here are testing

The most common misconception about IELTS Academic Reading is that it rewards wide vocabulary. It doesn't — at least not primarily. The passages are written for educated non-specialists and the real difficulty is in the question logic. True/False/Not Given is where most candidates drop marks: "False" means the text directly contradicts the statement; "Not Given" means there's simply no evidence either way. Mixing up those two accounts for more lost marks than any vocabulary gap does. Matching Headings is the other high-loss question type — you're matching the main idea of each paragraph, not the first or last sentence.

Time is the other variable. Sixty minutes for 40 questions across 3 passages leaves about 20 minutes per passage — but Passage 3 is harder and usually needs closer to 25 minutes. Candidates who score Band 7 consistently tend to move quickly through Passages 1 and 2, banking time for the third. If you're regularly running out of time, the problem is usually over-reading in Passages 1 and 2, not slowness overall. Don't read every word — use the questions to guide where you look in the passage.

For the IELTS Academic Reading band score, 30 correct answers out of 40 corresponds to approximately Band 7, and 35 correct is Band 8. Each practice test in this collection uses the same 3-passage structure, 40-question format and question type mix as the real exam, so your score here translates directly. After each test, review the questions you got wrong and categorise them — pattern recognition across multiple tests is the fastest way to find the gaps worth fixing.
