Start Free Reading TestIELTS General Training Reading — where candidates drop marks and how to score Band 7
IELTS General Training Reading catches a lot of candidates in Section 3. Sections A and B are accessible — short notices, advertisements, workplace documents — and most test-takers move through them quickly. Section C is a longer article written at a difficulty level close to Academic Reading. Candidates who treat it as an extension of Section B, or who run out of time because they were too thorough earlier, are the ones who end up a mark or two short of the band they need.
Each section rewards a different reading approach. Section A is about locating specific information fast — scan for names, numbers and key terms, not reading end-to-end. Section B covers workplace texts like contracts, manuals and policies; understanding the structure of the document matters here, not just individual sentences. Section C requires more careful reading because the question types (matching headings, Yes/No/Not Given, sentence completion) depend on understanding what a whole paragraph is actually saying.
Band 7 in IELTS General Training Reading requires around 30 correct answers out of 40. Each test here uses the Section A, B and C structure with the same question types as the real exam and gives you an instant band score. If you're consistently scoring 27–29, you're close — a targeted run through Section C question types will usually close that gap.
