How Accurate Is the IELTS to TOEFL Conversion?
Score conversion between IELTS and TOEFL is an approximation, not an exact equivalence. The two tests measure English proficiency differently:
- IELTS uses a band scale of 1–9 with 0.5 increments and includes a live Speaking interview.
- TOEFL iBT scores from 0–120 and uses recorded Speaking tasks.
The conversion table above is based on the ETS comparison study. Always check the exact score requirement of your university or immigration authority — many publish specific minimum scores for each test separately.
IELTS or TOEFL — Which Should You Take?
Both tests are accepted by thousands of universities and immigration authorities worldwide. The choice usually comes down to your destination:
- UK, Australia, Canada (immigration): IELTS General Training is the standard. Many visa pathways specify IELTS.
- US universities: TOEFL is historically preferred but IELTS is widely accepted.
- UK, Australian universities: Both accepted — check each institution's page.
