IELTS Speaking Part 2 — The Cue Card Task Explained

In IELTS Speaking Part 2 you receive a cue card with a topic and 3–4 bullet points. You have 1 minute to prepare notes, then speak for 1–2 minutes without interruption. Part 3 discussion questions follow immediately, exploring the same theme in more depth.

Describe a Person
Someone who influenced you, a friend, a public figure, or a family member you admire.
Describe a Place
A city, building, natural landmark, or place from your childhood you remember well.
Describe an Object
A gift, a piece of technology, something you own or something you would like to have.
Describe an Event or Experience
A celebration, achievement, journey, or a time you helped someone or learned something new.

How to Use IELTS Speaking Cue Cards for Part 2 Practice

In the real IELTS Speaking test, Part 2 lasts 3–4 minutes. You receive a cue card, get 1 minute to prepare notes, then speak for 1–2 minutes. The examiner may ask 1–2 follow-up questions at the end.

Read the cue card prompt and all bullet points carefully.

Make brief notes — do not write full sentences.
