The book I want to talk about is "Sapiens" by Yuval Noah Harari, which I finished reading about two months ago. It's basically a history of the human species, starting from the earliest humans in Africa and going all the way to the modern day. But unlike a normal history book, it doesn't focus much on kings or wars. Instead, the author tries to explain how humans came to dominate the planet — through things like agriculture, money, religion, and shared stories that hold large groups together. I decided to read it because a friend kept recommending it. She works in finance and she told me it completely changed the way she thinks about money and trust. At first I was a bit hesitant because I'm not usually a fan of non-fiction, but once I started reading I couldn't really put it down. What I thought of it overall is that it's both fascinating and a little uncomfortable. Some of the arguments are quite controversial — the author is very direct about the negative side of farming, for example, which I'd never thought about before. But that's exactly what made it worth reading. It made me see ordinary things, like supermarkets or paper money, in a completely different way. I've already lent it to my brother.

About six months ago my elderly neighbour had a small accident at home, and I ended up being the one who helped her through it. It happened on a Sunday afternoon. I heard a loud sound from the flat next door and then her calling out, but she lives alone so there was no one to respond. I went over and found that she had slipped in her kitchen and twisted her ankle quite badly. She couldn't stand up properly on her own. What I did was first help her sit on the sofa, get her some ice and water, and then call her daughter, whose number she kept on the fridge. I also drove her to the hospital because her daughter lived an hour away and she didn't want to wait. The doctor said it was a bad sprain but nothing was broken, which was a relief. She needed help because she'd been living alone since her husband passed away two years ago, and her children all live in different cities. Even small accidents are a much bigger deal when you're seventy-eight and there's no one around to notice. Afterwards I felt glad I'd been home — but more than that, it made me realise how much elderly people in our neighbourhoods depend on small acts of attention from the people around them. I started checking in on her once a week after that, just briefly, and we've actually become quite close.

The celebration I'd like to describe is Eid ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. It's observed by Muslim communities across Asia — in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Asia — and it's probably the most significant celebration in the calendar for most Muslim families. The date shifts every year because it follows the lunar calendar, so the timing is slightly different each time. Preparation usually starts a week or two before — families buy new clothes, sweets are made or ordered, and the house gets a proper clean. On the morning itself, everyone goes to the mosque for a special prayer, and then the rest of the day is spent moving between relatives' houses. Children and younger family members receive small gifts of money from the elders, which is something most people remember very fondly from when they were growing up. Food is a big part of the day. Every house puts out different sweets and savoury dishes, and you're sort of expected to eat at every stop, which by the fourth or fifth house becomes a real challenge. What makes it more than just a religious occasion is that it's often the one time of year when the whole extended family actually ends up in the same place. People travel back from other cities for it, sometimes just for two or three days. There's a particular feeling on Eid morning that I find hard to describe — a kind of collective lightness, like the whole neighbourhood exhaled at the same time. I haven't experienced anything quite like it on any other day.

I'd like to talk about my secondary school English teacher, Mr Hassan, who had a big influence on me when I was around fifteen years old. I knew him for three years because he taught my class for the entire upper school. He wasn't just a normal teacher who came in, read from the textbook and left. He was very passionate about reading and he often stayed after class to discuss books with students who were interested. The reason he influenced me so much was that he changed the way I looked at studying. Before his class, I used to study only to pass exams. But he kept telling us that the real point of education was to think for yourself, not to memorise. He gave us essay topics that didn't have a single correct answer, and he expected us to defend our opinions in class. Because of him, I started reading books outside of school, mostly novels and biographies. I also became more confident about speaking in front of people. Even now, when I'm preparing for a presentation or writing something important, I think about the way he taught us to organise our ideas. He's probably the main reason I ended up studying literature. I'm genuinely still grateful for that.

The thing that's probably made the biggest difference to my daily life is my noise-cancelling headphones — I bought them about a year ago and honestly I'm not sure how I managed before that. I use them almost every day, mostly when I'm working from a coffee shop or commuting on public transport. They work by using small microphones on the outside that pick up surrounding noise — like traffic or chatter — and then producing the opposite sound wave inside the headphone to cancel it out. So instead of just blocking sound with the cushioning, they actively remove it. It sounds a bit like magic the first time you try them. The main reason they're so useful for me is that I find it really hard to focus in noisy places. I'm easily distracted by background conversations, and before I bought these headphones I used to lose hours of work just because I couldn't concentrate. Now I can sit in almost any environment, switch them on, and immediately get into a kind of bubble where it's just me and what I'm working on. Apart from work, they're also great for travel. Long flights used to leave me exhausted because of the constant engine noise, but with these I arrive feeling fresh. I'd genuinely recommend them to anyone who works on a laptop or travels a lot.

A small business I know about is a cafe shop near my home. I remember that it was opened about 20 years ago. The owner is an adult who was just a kid when he started working at this shop. The cafe is not a huge one. The interior of the cafe is a traditional Italian style, which gives a beautiful vibe when you enter the cafe. Moreover, the cafe has a sitting area where tables and chairs are made of old granite stone. From outside the cafe looks even more beautiful with the mosaic glass work on the exterior design. If we talk about the menu, the cafe offers the black beans coffee only. Though it had some desserts options as well in the past but now it does not serve it anymore for unknown reasons. However, the coffee sells fast at this cafe due to its aroma and taste that everyone likes. In the future, I would like to open up a small cafe as well. I know it's gonna take a lot of hard work to make it successful but I am going to put an effort.
